Let’s talk Resumes.
How should I format my resume? Does it matter if I have my picture on the resume or not? Should I use colors or designs throughout it?
All of these questions I run into when speaking with individuals on how a resume should look – and I’m going to have an unpopular opinion here – but there is no right or wrong answer. The reason is there are a multitude of factors that come into play when it comes to formatting a resume and what works for one person may not work for another. However, there are some general guidelines that can help make your resume stand out and leave a good impression on potential employers.
Keep the formatting clean, simple, and consistent throughout the entire document. Use a font that is easy to read and stick to one or two colors. Avoid using too many graphics or design elements as they can distract from the content and make your resume look cluttered.
Bullet points are a great way to make information concise and easy to read. It’s also important to use white space effectively by not overcrowding the page.
As for including a picture on your resume, it’s not necessary and could potentially be seen as unprofessional. Save your headshot for your LinkedIn profile or personal website.
When it comes to using colors or designs, it’s important to consider the industry you’re applying to. A more creative field may appreciate a resume with a pop of color or design elements, while a traditional job may prefer a more traditional look. I typically recommend adding a pop of color with a line under the name or a page break to help your resume be picked up in a sea of black and white or over-colored resumes.
Ultimately, the content of your resume should be the most important aspect. Highlight your relevant experience and skills, while showcasing your achievements effectively. Metrics are important!
